Why SSI sometimes pays twice in one month

SSI is paid on the 1st of each month. When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, Social Security pays it on the last business day before, which is in the month before. That month then has two SSI payments, and the following month has none. The second payment is not extra money: it's next month's payment, arriving a few days early. SSA says you don't need to report it.

Why it happens
SSA doesn't send payments on weekends or federal holidays. Rather than make you wait until after the 1st, it pays on the last business day before. SSA's own example: January 1, 2023 was a Sunday and New Year's Day, and December 31, 2022 was a Saturday, so January's SSI was paid on December 30, 2022.
The same thing happens every year, because New Year's Day is always a holiday. January's SSI is always paid in December.
What it means for your budget
The early payment is meant to cover the next month. If you spend it straight away, you'll have nothing coming on the 1st of the next month.
A simple way to handle it:
- when two payments arrive in one month, set the second one aside;
- use it for next month's rent and bills, as if it had arrived on the 1st.
The December payment and the new COLA
Because January's SSI arrives in December, it's paid at the new year's rate. So the second December payment is usually a little larger than the first, once the cost-of-living adjustment takes effect. Estimate the 2027 increase.
If you also get Social Security
Only the SSI date moves this way. If you get both, your Social Security is paid separately on the 3rd of the month, which also moves to the business day before if the 3rd is a weekend or holiday. Check this month's dates.
Ignore "double payment" headlines
Some websites describe these months as a "double payment" or a "bonus". They're neither. You still get 12 SSI payments a year; two of them just arrive in the same month.
